24 Hours in Lake George New York

Lake George Sign

I've been coming to Lake George since I was very young, so I may be a bit biased with my review of the town. Last time I was here we were only visiting the Six flags in the area. This time we had a chance to visit in early May, and while it was still too chilly to really enjoy the lake itself, we found plenty to do! Here's some of the activities we choose for our 24 hour stay in Lake George New York!

Shelving Rock falls

We Started our trip by checking into the Holiday Inn, and discovered the towns Prom was being hosted here! After receiving an amazing upgrade to a room with a view of the lake we were able to enjoy dinner at the hotels restaurant. For a preview of the food on this trip please see the video. We also indulged in an excellent breakfast at the Biscotti brothers in the morning before heading off on our only hike of the day.

Located on the eastern shore of the lake is shelving rock falls. This is deep in the woods on a gravel road that narrows quite a bit, but don't expect to be alone! We were accompanied by numerous hikers and joggers despite it being such an early time of the season.

The waterfall is located only a short 1/3 of a mile from the parking lot but falls very far below and is well worth the visit. I'm sad I didn't make it out to this side of the lake before! There is also another waterfall named Buttermilk falls on the Falls Rd you take to get here. It is located on private property but you can see it from the road if you stop quickly. Please do not wander onto their lawn!

Lake George

After making it back to town we headed to one of the top historical sites in town, the Fort William Henry. This living museum has everything from displays, live demonstrations of weapons fire, a shop, and reenactors but it also has one of the best views of the lake from its upper ramparts. A bit pricey for what it is at $25 a person, you could easily walk through the entire fort in an hour.

That said, this is a tourist town and nothing is cheap. Speaking of, I would recommend avoiding Frankenstein's Wax museum unless you are with younger children and want to give them a small fright. While I loved it when I was young, it is severely outdated by modern standards. Other fun activities include cruises aboard the steam ship Mini HaHa and more mini-golf courses than you can reasonably do in a week.

Taqueria Paloma

While wandering the downtown make sure to enjoy Shepard Park. This local favorite spot is a gem, with beautiful shore views and tons of Adirondack chairs to recline in and enjoy. For lunch, just a short walk from Shepard Park is Taqueria Paloma, and excellent stop for great tacos and fresh food. I had the Barbacoa Tacos, my absolute favorite kind and these were a solid 9/10!

While it was a short stop we still managed to catch a round of Mini-golf at Goony Golf, my favorite spot from childhood before heading home. And on the way home we stopped in Cohoes [located an hour south] to see Cohoes Falls. This is supposedly the second biggest waterfall by volume in America and it can be viewed from the top and bottom of a park, or from an overlook down the street [overlook park] .This is a MUST see if you are heading south from Lake George like we did
