A weekend in Boston

Bear Hill Tower
Bear Hill Tower

We traveled to Boston for another fight at the local "No Boundary Fight" show, and took the opportunity to explore the area a bit. I haven't been to Boston in close to 20 years so I wanted to see a quick highlight of the top tourist spots where I was staying. We were camped out in the town of Melrose, north of Boston and began with a snowy set of hikes.

Stone Zoo Flamingos

Located in a park named "The Middlesex Fells", a Scandinavian term for barren hills or rocky outcropping, this popular park is central to the are and has numerous trails and attractions. We began with a quick hike to see Bear Tower, but it was fenced off and closed to some fear of instability. Luckily, located a few minutes away is the Stone Zoo. This small zoo is incredibly high quality and full of exotic, and not so exotic animals to view. The wolves were a real highlight of this zoo!

If I had to pick though, the highlight of this area was definitely the hike in the south section to wrights tower. The tower itself was closed but the view of Boston from the cliff was spectacular. I'm not sure it gets any better than this!

Both Hikes were free.

The Zoo cost $24/person during our visit.

There are a number of other trails for all skill levels as well!

Museum of Fine Arts Boston
Museum of Fine Arts

After we finished our fight we decided to drive into the city for the second day. I really would have loved to do the Freedom trail but it was a bitter cold winter day. Instead we opted to do some indoor activities. The highlight of the day was definitely the Museum of Fine Arts. This is one of the best art museums that I've had the pleasure to visit. The amount of classical Greek and Roman art, Medieval and Egyptian works are worth the price of Entry alone.

But the Museum doesn't stop with Ancient works. The American art even includes an entire room of Niagara Falls art. An ENTIRE room worth! Every single art style a person can imagine is here, finely presented and preserved. Easily worth the admission of $27/person and we managed to spend close to 5 hours here despite moving at an ungodly speed to see it all in our limited window of time.

Chocolate Cake at Faneuil Hall

One thing we won't recommend is the other major tourist trap Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Although it's interesting to see the building and the old brick walk ways, the stores and food stalls are over priced and not very local. Although there's a lot to choose from it was all far more expensive than what you can find anywhere else in the city so this is an easy pass for me!

There's a lot left to do in Boston the next time I visit. It's definitely a city that's going to take some time for me to finish. Maybe if I don't visit in the dead of winter next time!
