Buttermilk Falls is a less known set of falls and cascades hiding in Plymouth CT that was described as "one of the states prettiest". So with that in mind, and our dog Margo in tow, we rushed out to see if the hype was deserved. What we got was a short and sweet little "hike" but a mixed bag in actual experience.
First off, I have to HIGHLY recommend that you do NOT bring your dog with you. There was a tragic amount of trash and broken glass everywhere. We were extremely careful to do our best to walk our dog around it but the level of trash here is completely unacceptable. There were a few families with small children but this seems like a place where young locals come to party and just trash the area. Because this is not a state park it is unlikely to receive a major clean up and the constant attention required to keep things tidy.
The previous statements are really sad because this is a truly cute little glade with multiple small water falls and a large main fall at the end. I also wouldn't consider this to be a real hike, you can cross a bridge and see the entire place in 30 minutes flat. If the trash wasn't there I would even call this place magical, it really has an amazing look and feel to it and there's even some construction going on with new bridge work. Speaking of bridges, the south bridge that we left on, is sorely in need of replacement. It bounced and bowed under my weight and added to my feeling that this place is a real mixed bag.
Would I visit? If you're in the area it's definitely worth checking out, but I wouldn't travel a considerable distance to see it. It's small size and the quantity of trash and broken glass make this a one time visit for us and probably limits it's over all appeal in general.
