Gillette Castle may be one of the smaller state parks in the area, but between its spectacular castle and enchanting forests it's one of the best ways to spend an afternoon. We visited on one of the most humid days possible but still managed to hike all of the main trails in just a few hours despite stopping to film and take photos. If you add a tour of the castle and museum you could easily add about an hour to that. Don't expect this to be an all day experience but Devil's Hopyard is right down the road if you want to make it a full day experience.
History
While the museum is currently closed, the history of the property is very interesting. William Gillette was an actor best known for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage. He built the castle in the spirit of medieval architecture but the interior is distinctly modern for its time. On his death the state purchased his estate which they believe would have pleased him as his will gave directions that the property did not fall into the hands "of some blithering saphead who has no conception of where he is or with what surrounded."
The castle is also currently closed but when open the admission price is worth it! the knowledgeable park rangers have a wealth of information about both Gillettes life and also the structure itself. Fun facts such as how not one of the 47 doors in the castle are exactly the same will be shared with you as you marvel at his parlor with hidden spy mirrors, his private art collection and custom... well, everything!
What we did
With the museum and castle both closed we spent our day hiking the grounds. The castle itself is situated on top of a hill with a truly commanding panoramic view of the river. The Western woods hug the shore, and while you won't escape the sound of motor boats, these woods can only be described as enchanting. Multiple little bridges and rock features, each unique, await your explorations. Feel free to relax at the picnic table tucked away right on the edge of the river for a nice picnic.
The southern path includes a crumbling stair and stone monuments at the bottom of a long hill and nice clearing in the glade. The northern woods include the old train tunnel for his mini steam train, more bridges and several ponds.
While we hiked the entire grounds quickly, make sure you enjoy the plentiful flowers, the train station ["Grand Central"} , the castle and museum when they reopen, the views, unique structures and even a show that is occasionally held at the little outdoor theater.
