Watch our video and then read about the trip below:
Sleeping Giant State Park hosts so many amazing trails to choose from that it can be hard to choose which to do on any given day. The Orange trail is one of the least hiked trails and definitely one of the easiest, despite covering almost the entire length of the park. When researching the trails at Sleeping Giant, I found that Orange was the only one I could not find significant information on. We decided it would be a great idea to take this trail two days after a tropical storm smashed through the area downing trees, and it certainly made the entire experience more interesting.
The most obvious change hiking in these conditions was simply having to go off trail to get around the downed trees. The more exciting difference was how many animals were out and about. Although I missed a great shot of a deer family when we had just parked our car, I did manage to snap shots of many toads, frogs, birds, chipmunks and even a snake!
The trail itself was fairly flat with only some minor up and down hills, a lot of rocks to trip over and.... not much else. Orange Trail is one of the least hiked trails in Sleeping Giant for a reason. It's a hike, but mostly a pleasant walk through the woods. One thing about Sleeping Giant State Park, as a whole, is that you get what you work for. This trail is very easy so the final vista point is a partial view of Quinnipiac college and New Haven.
